Communication 102: Who?

The basics of communication with children:

Who?

Who else? Who loves them best? Knows them best?

Okay, in absence of that, please choose someone that loves all of you dearly and with whom your children are very comfortable. If it must be someone outside the family, try to be present if possible and at minimum, prep them with your child’s vocabulary and know what will be said. Make sure the message is delivered using age appropriate content and your child’s own “kidspeak”.

And don’t forget to call in an expert if you need one. Speak with your cancer center’s social worker or locate a great child life specialist. If you can’t find the words or simply don’t have it in you, do the right thing for your children and find someone who can help.
